Date. (c.1880).

Photograph of the railway from Colombo to Kandy in Sri Lanka, taken by William Henry Louis Skeen & Co. in the 1870s. Photography was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 1840s and by the end of the 19th century was practiced extensively, both local and foreign artists recording the many facets of the beautiful island. Skeen's firm, set up in Colombo in the 1860s, comprised the most famous photographers of the 19th century in Sri Lanka, extensively documenting industry, landscape and racial types and exhibiting at major international exhibitions between 1870-1900. It also recorded the construction of the Ceylon Railways between the 1860s and 1890s. This view shows a locomotive on the line, with a steep drop on the leftt. British rule in Sri Lanka began in 1815 when the last bastion of the Sinhalese kings, the central hill region of Kandy, caved in after resisting colonial rule for 300 years after the fall of the coastal regions. In 1842 English coffee planters clamoured for a railway from Kandy to Colombo, to transport their estate produce for shipment quickly and regularly, as they had by then opened up virgin lands in the hill country to grow coffee, a viable commercial crop. The construction of the Ceylon Railways was a feat of engineering accomplished over difficult terrain with steep inclines, involving tunneling, cutting through solid rock formations, building steep embankments over valleys and ravines and constructing bridges and culverts. Muybridge's photography of horses in motion began in 1872 at Leland Stanford's stock farm in Palo Alto. After one year of intense photography in 1877-8, Muybridge's work continued here intermittently until 1881. Muybridge and Stanford were close acquaintances at the beginning of this partnership. However, this particular business association is said to have started because Stanford wanted to settle a bet around whether all four of a horse's hooves left the ground at speed; something Muybridge's single shot motion photographs of 'Occident' - one of Stanford's trotters - proved correct. Whilst stationed at the Khyber Pass Edward Hardman met Captain Kenneth Burrell, a man who hadn't planned on an army career but rather hoped to set up a photographic studio back home in Liverpool, England. Hardman and Burrell decided to go into business together and in 1923, they acquired 51a Bold Street in Liverpool's fashionable commercial centre. Starting the business was difficult, and Hardman resorted to selling and repairing wirelesses to subsidize the studio. Eventually it gained a reputation for being the place for anyone with distinction in Merseyside to be photographed by Burrell & Hardman. His house and studio, at 59 Rodney Street, was taken over by the E. Chambré Hardman Trust to conserve his work, which was later transferred to the National Trust...... £65.00

He soon became famous for inventing camera lenses, especially one that produces panoramic views. His first catalogue, including 160 architectural views, was issued in 1855. At this point, his closest assistants are Giuseppe Bresolio (Bresolin?), Fortunato Antonio Perini and Carlo Naya. During the 1860's Carlo Ponti offered an album of about 20 views of Venice, entitled "Ricordo di Venezia". Local playwrights were encouraged to mount Western-style operatic and musical productions that had appeal to a growing middle- and upper class sophistication. The Teikoku Gekijo Kaisha (Imperial Theatre Company), had seating for 1700, was founded in 1910 with the purpose of building Japan's first Western-style theatre and producing the country's first non-Japanese theatre programs. The result was the Teikoku Gekijo (Imperial Theatre, also known as the Imperial Garden Theatre), completed in 1911 on land in the Marunouchi district across from the Imperial Palace plaza. Many of the Imperial Theatre's earliest productions were translations of foreign operas, plays and musicals. A translation of Hamlet, written by Tsubouchi Shoyo and produced by the Bungei Kyokai (Literary Arts Society) in 1911, was the theatre's first complete work performed on the theatre's stage. The Magic Flute, produced in early 1912 with an all-Japanese cast, was the theatre's first operatic performance.
