Comic Cuts was a British comic . It was created by the reporter Alfred Harmsworth through his company Amalgamated Press . It was published from 1890 to 1953, lasting 3006 issues, and in its early days inspired other publishers to produce rival comics. Its first issue was an assortment of reprints from American publications. During its lifetime, the comic merged with many others including Golden Penny (1928), Jolly Comic (1939) and Larks (1940). Comic Cuts finally disappeared in September 1953 when it was merged with Knockout. Comic Cuts held the record for the most issues of a British weekly comic for 46 years, until The Dandy overtook it in 1999. Rare copies..... £60.00

Date. 6th and 13th August 1892 - 17th and 24th September 1892 - 25th Febuary 1893 - 1st April 18, 1893. .

London, Amalgamated Press. Page size 10 1/2 x 15ins. Pp. 8 per comic + Illustrations throughout, edge nicks & frayed.

The last decade of the 19th century saw a boom in comic publishing, beginning with Comic Cuts (1890-1953), another of the creations of the press baron, Alfred Harmsworth (later Lord Northcliffe). Part of its success was due to its unprecedentedly low price of one halfpenny, half the cost of its predecessors. Rival publishers soon brought out competitors to Comic Cuts which were similar in style and name, such as Funny Cuts (1890-1920), and Harmsworth responded with further titles of his own, such as Illustrated Chips (1890-1952). These titles followed fairly closely the format established by Funny Folks and there is little to distinguish one title from another. Rare copies. ....... £40.00

London, John Tiranti & Co. Folio, [13 x 10ins]. Pp. viii + 105 Full page architectural plates. Original cloth spine over boards, remnants of dust jackets...

In 1758, Robert, James, and their younger brother William Adam started their business in London (living in Lower Grosvenor Street), focusing on designing complete schemes for the decoration and furnishing of houses. Palladian design was popular, but Robert had evolved a new, more flexible style incorporating elements of classic Roman design alongside influences from Greek, Byzantine and Baroque styles. The Adam brothers’ success can also be attributed to a desire to design everything down to the smallest detail, ensuring a sense of unity in their designs.....£80.00

Date. [c.1870].

England, Page sizes, [7 1/2 x 10 to 5 x 7 1/2ins]. No Dates. 5 Loose Original Pencil and Crayon Marine Sketches.

Titles:- Bawleys off the Nore, Yorkshire yawl Scarborough, Beach Yawls at Caister, Billy Boys Schooner and Top Sail Schooner, all sailing off the east coast of England.

A Bawley was an English sailing vessel typified by a boomless cutter rig and probably named for having a boiler for cooking shrimp in amidships..-- The Billy boys were usually twin masted (Ketch rigged) and flew as much sail as possible using a range of head-sails and topsails, some had square topsails and topgallants. -- A schooner is a type of sailing vessel characterized by the use of fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts with the forward mast being no taller than the rear masts.--a new type of lugger appeared after 1833. The middle mast was dispensed with mainly because it obstructed fishing operations. These "two masted luggers" were about 35 feet in length, and about 20 tons in weight. They were half decked. -- Beach yawls were maintained in a permanent state of readiness. To launch, the mizzen was set first and sheeted to a long bumpkin; whilst other crew members carried the moveable ballast, usually sacks of sand and gravel that were easy to empty before returning to the beach in a rough sea. Some yawls were berthed on skids, so that as soon as the stools were removed, the vessel immediately moved...... £100.00

Claude Duflos was an engraver and etcher: He made prints after most contemporary painters. His total works numbed more than 300 pieces, a third of which are portraits. He was a pupil of Jean-Francis de Troy at the Academy de France in Rome. Mezzotint works by roughening the copper plate with thousands of little dots made by a metal tool with small teeth, called a "rocker." In printing, the tiny pits in the copper plate hold the ink when the face of the plate is wiped clean. A high level of quality and richness in the print can be achieved.
