London, William Holland. Page Size,[9 1/2 x 13ins]. Image size [9 1/2 x 6 1/2ins]. Original hand coloured aquatint taken from a drawing by Adam Buck, engraved by Freeman & Stadler, Trimmed caption.

Heloise, the teenage niece of a powerful canon of the Cathedral of Paris. Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was one of the most brilliant minds of the medieval period. Heloise and Peter Abelard fell in love, had a child, and secretly married. When Heloise decided to enter a convent to quiet rumours about them, her uncle believed Abelard had dishonoured her. One night he sent a gang of thugs into his quarters; they beat him up. Humiliated, Abelard became a monk and Heloise's temporary decision became permanent. She became a nun, later an abbess. They never again lived together, nor with their son, though their love endured through letters exchanged over decades.

London, William Holland. Page Size,[9 1/2 x 13ins]. Image size [9 1/2 x 6 1/2ins]. Original hand coloured aquatint taken from a drawing by Adam Buck, engraved by Freeman & Stadler, very good condition.

Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was one of the most brilliant minds of the medieval period. Born just as universities were first being formed in Europe, he mastered the method of rational arguments. First, challenging his peers and then his professors, he left the university in Paris to set up his own lectures bringing with him flocks of students who loved his audacious style as much as his intellect. Abelard's life changed when he agreed, at age 36, to take on a private student - the teenage niece of a powerful canon of the Cathedral of Paris. Abelard and Heloise fell in love, had a child, and secretly married. (Antique Print.)

Britannia Bridge, Anglesey.

Date. [c.1850.]

London. Le Blond & Company. Image size 2 5/8 X 3 7/8ins. Page size 6 x 4 1/2 ins. £45.00

The company of Le Blond was formed by the brothers Abraham and Robert, in Stepney, London. They were the first company to take a licence from George Baxter's colour printing process in 1849. Colour printing had been practised for many years but was quite basic, using only a limited number of colours. The Baxter patented process meant an initial printing from a steel key plate, which gave the black outline and all the intricate detail and shading, then they would apply up to 20 different blocks made from either wood, copper or zinc - one for each colour they wanted to apply. Each block had to align perfectly. This key plate made all the difference and gave their images sharpness never before achieved.
