The active ingredient is now known as digitalis, after the plant's scientific name. Animals in Motion.
Date. 1918 4th imp..
London, Chapman Hall. Oblong 4to, [9 1/2 x 11 1/2ins]. Pp. 264 + Approx, 3,919 photographs (Chronophotography.), covering (approx) 34 different animals in 132 characteristic motions. Signed portrait print of Eadweard Muybridge opposite title page. Scattered spots throughout, mostly in margins.
Muybridge's photography of horses in motion began in 1872 at Leland Stanford's stock farm in Palo Alto. After one year of intense photography in 1877-8, Muybridge's work continued here intermittently until 1881. Muybridge and Stanford were close acquaintances at the beginning of this partnership. However, this particular business association is said to have started because Stanford wanted to settle a bet around whether all four of a horse's hooves left the ground at speed; something Muybridge's single shot motion photographs of 'Occident' - one of Stanford's trotters - proved correct. Nicks to outer edges not affecting images. Covers loose. Rare copy...... £200.00 |

William Robinson (1838 - 1935) was an Irish practical gardener and journalist whose ideas about wild gardening spurred the movement that evolved into the English cottage garden, a parallel to the search for honest simplicity and vernacular style of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Robinson is credited as an early practitioner of the mixed herbaceous border of hardy perennial plants, a champion too of the "wild garden", who vanquished the high Victorian pattern garden of planted-out bedding schemes. Robinson's new approach to gardening gained popularity through his magazines and several books-particularly The Wild Garden, and The English Flower Garden. Heavy book....... £110.00

Early in 1694 Scheuchzer took his degree of doctor in medicine at the University of Utrecht, and then returned to Altdorf, Germany to complete his mathematical studies. He went back to Zürich in 1696, and was made junior town physician (Poliater), with the promise of the professorship of mathematics; this he obtained in 1710. Scheuchzer dealt intensively with fossils, especially those of animals, and in 1726 he found the skeleton of a man who had thought had perished in the deluge, he called it "homo diluvii testis". His interpretation of the fossil was wrong. French naturalist Georges Cuvier re-examined the specimen and showed that it was actually a large prehistoric salamander. £110.00 |
