Russell's views on Home Rule underwent a change around the turn the century and he gradually became a critic of Unionist policies in Ireland. From 1900 put himself at the head of the Farmers and Labourers Union, an Ulster tenant-farmer protest movement demanding compulsory land purchase, similar to the land and labour movement in the south. His 1901 book Ireland and the Empire was an attack on the Irish agrarian system. From 1902 to 1903 he was a key Ulster farmer representative at the Dublin "Land Conference" which resulted in the passing of the Land Purchase Act of 1903. Barkly was sworn in as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of British Guiana on 12 February 1849. His family connections with British Guiana and the West Indies in general served him well as governor of the colony, and prompted Lord Grey, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, to refer to his "remarkable skill and ability" in addressing the colony's economic issues by widening the franchise of the College of Kiezers. In 1853, he was transferred to Jamaica and served three years. In November 1856, Barkly was appointed Governor of Victoria, Australia, arriving in Melbourne on 24 December 1856. He achieved one of his main goals of stable government. In August 1870 he was sent to the Cape of Good Hope as Governor of Cape Colony and as British High Commissioner for Southern Africa. He helped to implement responsible government in the Cape and worked closely with John Molteno, its first elected Prime Minister....... £25.00 |

Dillon became a leading land reform agitator as member of the original committee of the Irish National Land League, spearheading the policy of "boycotting" advocated by Michael Davitt with whom he was allied in close friendship. and was at first an ardent supporter of Charles Stewart Parnell. He travelled to the United States with Parnell on a fund-raising mission for the Land League. On his return he denounced William Ewart Gladstone's Land Act of 1881 as achieving nothing for small farmers. His views on agrarian reform and on Home Rule led him being branded an extremist, which resulted in his arrest from May until August 1881 under the Irish Coercion Act.......... £25.00 |

He was at this time Member of Parliament for Bradford (1860-1874), having previously sat for Rochdale from 1852 to 1857. In 1874 he retired from public life, and received from his admirers a present of ten thousand guineas. He died at Sevenoaks...... £25.00 |

He passed out and commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1850 Markham served in the Crimean War and the Eastern campaign of 1854, and up to January 1855, including the affair of M'Kenzie's Farm, the Battle of Alma and the Battle of Inkerman, the Siege of Sevastopol and repulse of the Russian sortie on 26 October 1854 (he was awarded the medal with three clasps, appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honor and awarded the Turkish Medal). He served in India in 1858, and was present at the action of Secundra on 23 January 1858 (he was awarded the medal). Sir Henry Evelyn Wood, (1838 -1919) was a British Army officer. After an early career in the Royal Navy, Wood joined the British Army in 1855. He served in several major conflicts including the Indian Mutiny where, as a lieutenant, he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the face of the enemy that is awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, for rescuing a local merchant from a band of robbers who had taken their captive into the jungle, where they intended to hang him. Wood further served as a commander in several other conflicts, notably the Third Anglo-Ashanti War, the Anglo-Zulu War, the First Boer War and the Mahdist War. His service in Egypt led to his appointment as Sirdar where he reorganised the Egyptian Army. He returned to Britain to serve as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Aldershot Command from 1889, as Quartermaster-General to the Forces from 1893 and as Adjutant General from 1897. His last appointment was as commander of 2nd Army Corps (later renamed Southern Command) from 1901 to 1904.......... £25.00 |

Lord Zetland was a British nobleman and politician. Born in Marylebone, London He was the eldest son of the 1st Earl and his wife Harriet Hale, he was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1818 he was elected Whig Member of Parliament for his father and grandfather’s old seat of Richmond, becoming representative for York twelve years later. In 1835 he returned to Parliament as member for Richmond, and four years later succeeded his father as second Earl of Zetland. Like his father a prominent freemason, Lord Zetland was the United Grand Lodge of England’s Grand Master from 1844 to 1870. Zetland was a senior member of the Jockey Club and won The Derby and St Leger Stakes with his horse Voltigeur in 1850. In the year of his succession to the earldom he was appointed Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of the North Riding of Yorkshire, and in 1861 became a Knight of the Thistle. He resigned the Order on being made a Knight of the Garter in 1872, and died the following year at Aske Hall, Yorkshire........ £25.00 |

The 2nd Viscount Combermere became a posthumous celebrity in connection with "Lord Combermere's Ghost Photo", taken in 1891 by Sybell Corbet. She was Lady Combermere's sister She set up her camera with its shutter open for one hour in the Abbey Library while the entire staff were out, attending Lord Combermere's funeral some four miles away. When the plate was developed, the transparent image of a man sitting in one of the library chairs was noticed. Many of the staff said that the image looked like the late 2nd Viscount, and the apparition happened to be sitting in Lord Combermere's favorite chair. Lord Combermere's father, the 1st Viscount, had been involved in a mysterious incident himself several years earlier while serving as Governor of Barbados when he had the Chase Vault opened and carefully examined in search of an explanation for the "moving coffins" there........ £25.00 |

Bates was the son of Joseph Bates, a wool finisher and exporter and his wife Rebekah Walker. He was sent to Calcutta in 1833 to join his elder brother in the business which his father had started since the ending of the East India Company monopoly. He made two short trips to England in 1838-39 and in 1843, but otherwise remained in India at Calcutta and Bombay until 1848. Back in England, Bates began his own business chartering ships for the Bombay trade. He then started to buy ships, acquiring the newly built Jamsetjee Cursetjee, named after his Parsee partner in Bombay. He had built a fleet of 60 ships in 1860 and eventually owned 130 ships........ £25.00 |

Davidson served as chaplain to Archibald Campbell Tait when Tait was Archbishop of Canterbury and married Tait's daughter. After Tait's death he remained at Lambeth Palace as Chaplain to Edward White Benson when he became Archbishop of Canterbury. A favourite of Queen Victoria, he was appointed Dean of Windsor at a very young age. He was subsequently Bishop of Rochester between 1891 and 1895 and Bishop of Winchester between 1895 and 1903 before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury in 1903. He played a major part in the funeral ceremonies for Queen Victoria in 1901, taking care, along with Dr. James Reid, of the wake at Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Rodger Lloyd, Church of England historian, thought that Davidson was one of the two or three greatest Archbishops of Canterbury. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury to retire, all his predecessors having died in office... £20.00 |

Guaranteed original coloured lithograph, very good condition, engraved by Day & Son from a drawing By Spy. - Titled "Oxford Cricket", slight nick to outer margin, not affecting image.Throughout his career Philipson was competing for the wicket-keeper's spot in the English Test side with Gregor MacGregor, which resulted in him playing in only five Test matches for England, which he did on the 1891/2 and 1894/5 tours of Australia. He also toured India with George Vernon in 1889, though this tour did not include any Tests. Philipson went to Eton and had a good record as a schoolboy cricketer, before going to Oxford, where he got his blue and where he became captain in 1889. He also represented Oxford at tennis, rackets and Association football. His highest first-class innings was his 150 for the University against Middlesex in 1887, and in this year he was selected to play for the Gentlemen at both Lord's and the Oval.

He entered the House of Lords on the death of his father in 1897 and made his maiden speech in February 1898. He served under Lord Salisbury and Arthur Balfour as Under-Secretary of State for India between 1900 and 1902 and under Balfour as Under-Secretary of State for War between 1902 and 1903. He made his last speech in the House of Lords in August 1904, three months before his premature death. Apart from his career in national politics he was a member of the Marylebone City Council between 1897 and 1901 and a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

Despite never becoming Prime Minister, he is regarded as one of the most important British politicians of the late 19th century and early 20th century, as well as a colourful character and renowned orator.

He was born at Burnham in Norfolk, the son of the vicar of the parish. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge and in 1814 was appointed assistant master at Eton under Dr John Keate. In 1834 he became headmaster of Eton, which role he performed until 1853, when he was elected Provost of Eton following the death of Francis Hodgson. Under his administration, new buildings were erected, including the school library and the sanatorium, the college chapel was restored, the Old Christopher Inn was closed, and the custom of Montem, the collection by street begging of funds for the university expenses of the captain of the school, was suppressed. An all-round sportsman and a very fine and amusing after dinner speaker. £25.00 |

An American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. He moved to California in 1853, later working there in a number of capacities, including miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist.
The 1860 massacre of between 80 and 200 Wiyots killed at the village of Tutulwat. Harte published a detailed account condemning the event, writing, "a more shocking and revolting spectacle never was exhibited to the eyes of a Christian and civilized people. Harte quit his job as a journalist one month later and moved to San Francisco.

Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott was a British land agent whose ostracism by his local community in Ireland as part of a campaign for workers' rights in 1880 gave the English language the verb to boycott, meaning "to ostracise" .In 1880, as part of its campaign for the "Three Fs" (fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale) to protect Irish tenants from exploitation, the Irish Land League under Michael Davitt withdrew the local labour required to save the harvest on Lord Erne's estate. When Boycott tried to undermine the campaign, the League launched a campaign of isolation against him in the local community. Neighbours would not talk to him. Shops would not serve him. Local labourers refused to tend his house, and the postman refused to deliver his mail.

He joined the army in 9th Lancers at age 19. Served in Afghanistan and won the Victoria Cross in South Africa. On 1st July 1879 at Ulundi, Zululand, during the retirement of the reconnoitering party Captain Lord William Beresford went to the assistance of an NCO of the 24th Regiment, whose horse had fallen and rolled on him. The Zulus were coming in great numbers, but Lord William, with help from a sergeant managed to mount the injured man behind him. He was, however, so dizzy that the sergeant, who had been keeping back the advancing Zulus, gave up his carbine and, riding alongside, helped to hold him on. They all finally reached safety.
