Later raised spine bands gilt with blind stamped decorated panels, Dr Johnson is the most quoted of English writers after Shakespeare and has been described as one of the outstanding figures of 18th-century England. For three decades, Johnson wrote biographies, poetry, essays, pamphlets and parliamentary reports. Between 1745 and 1755, Johnson wrote perhaps his best-known work, -A Dictionary of the English Language-.
