[c.1860].London. 4to, [9 1/2 x 11ins.] (Approx), 100 coloured prints, including (approx), 60 Kronheim coloured prints, a few marginal splits and marks.( image sizes, approx, 5 x 7ins) Taken from various Victorian books.Showing :- Rural scenes, trades, animals, children. town scenes, etc. Original morocco embossed gilt, slight leather loss & leather hinge splits. Holding firm.Kronheim & Co. utilized the Baxter process to create prints. Kronheim's chief innovation in the field was the use of zinc instead of wood blocks, which reduced the amount of time needed to complete prints, but resulted in a less shiny finish. By 1855, thanks in large part to the firm's use of zinc blocks; Kronheim & Co. had produced many different prints, including some for the 1855 Paris Exhibition. After the exhibition, Kronheim sold his share of the business to Oscar Frauenknecht......

[c.1880].York, (UK), St Jonn's College. 4to, [6 1/2 x 8ins.] 20 Pen/Ink sketches + 5 Watercolours + Many hand written poems, quotations, etc. Originalcloth gilt, rubbed.The scrap album is a record of student friendships at St John's College, York, in the 1880s. The college descends from two Anglican teacher training colleges, which were founded in York in 1841 (for men) and 1846 (for women). In 1862, the women's college relocated to Ripon. Over the next century, the colleges gradually diversified their education programmes. The colleges merged in 1974 to form the College of Ripon and York St John.

The plates are taken from various children's natural history books, alphabet picture books, greeting cards, etc. "Ye Book of Scraps" " Collected and Pasted in - by Edward and Ellen Bates of Manydown Park - Hants - for the entertainment of their Grandson. Tour through England, Wales and Europe. Date 1855 to 1871.

1855 - 1871. Folio [11 x 13 ins]. Approx 38 groups of Dried Flowers pasted on to each page, some full page, interspersed with approx 62 steel engraved views. Areas shown, Chester, Liverpool, Lake District, Tynmouth, Gloucester, Dover, Folkestone, etc. 9 of Wales, 30 views of the North of England, 22 views of the South of England and 8 loose contemporary photographs all with tissue guards. Half morocco gilt with raised spine bands, slight scuffing. The first tour started April 1855, second tour a year later, with a slight reference to a tour in 1871. As a memento, the unnamed tourist assembled the flowers, grasses and steel engraved views of each area visited, with ink annotations giving place name and date of visit. £180.00

Original half calf, rubbed. With leather ties.

(Code No. 3231)SCRAP BOOK. No Date, ca1860. Folio, [15 x 11 ins]. Approx' 240 full page humorous woodcut engravings + 105 printed colour & hand coloured full page engraved plates, (taken from natural history, children's nursery books etc, 200 + individual coloured plates, most Kronheim prints), some minor nicks to edges, most with two or more plates per single page. Original half morocco gilt, rubbed with slight loss.The book appears to be complete with no plates having being cut out. "Joseph Martin Kronheim was born in Magdeburg, Germany on 26th October 1810. He moved to Edinburgh, via Paris, when he was 22 before becoming established in London around 1846. In 1850, Kronheim acquired a license to operate the Baxter process and adapted it, using zinc blocks instead of wood blocks. This, however, resulted in a flatter finish. He then turned to lithography for a short time, but soon returned to printing by the Baxter process" ref :- E. J. Pratt Library. Victoria University. Please email for postal rate.
